Kandawgyi Lake
Kandawgyi Lake or also called as Royal Lake is one of the most beautiful attractions at sunset in Yangon. When the glittering Shwedagon is reflected in the waters is the best time for photographer to take amazing photos.
Located right at the Kandawgyi Kanpat road near the famous Shwedagon gold temple, Kandawgyi Royal Lake will bring tourists moments of tranquility and relaxation after a long day of exploring Yangon.
Kandawgyi Lake is a peaceful destination amidst and one of two large lakes in the bustling Yangon city. This is an artificial lake located east of Shwedagon Pagoda with water from Inya Lake flowing through a system of water paths. The lake was built to provide a clean water supply for the British colonial government at the time.

This 61-hectare lake is surrounded by the Kandawgyi Natural Park and Yangon Zoo, with an oceanographic institute and an amusement park. As such, the whole Kandawgyi complex is an ideal destination, suitable for both adults to relax and kids to entertain. Lake Kandawgyi is used to be the practice site of the Yangon Rowing Club, now becoming the Kandawgyi Royal Hotel. Along the lakeshore is the famous Karaweik palace, built based on the model of the royal boat in 1972. Today this work has become a buffet restaurant where tourists can enjoy a fancy yet romantic dinner with a fantastic view. To the south of the lake is a temple of Shin Upagot while the north is Utopia Tower, which is a construction of artificial stones built into interesting bars, playgrounds and karaoke stand.

Visiting Kandawgyi Lake, tourists will experience its beauty from different perspectives, as the space and scenery here display major differences between day and night. In the morning, at dawn tourists will see a silvery lake, covered in pearl-gray mist that is partly dyed pink by the first rays of sunshine. At dusk, the water is like a golden liquid, with the beautiful reddish shadow from the sun setting down.
Kandawgyi Lake at sunset time
Coming to Kandawgyi Royal Lake during the day, visitors can enjoy a fresh atmosphere and a beautiful space of evergreen trees, calm water, chirping birds, all creating a very impressive scenery. In summer, the colorful lotus flowers make the scene more romantic and vibrant than ever. Instead of the daydreaming look, at night, Kandawgyi Lake becomes extremely shimmering and fanciful with colorful lights, glistening pagoda and chill wind. Built by the British as a reservoir, Kandawgyi becomes the most attractive at sunset, when the sparkling Shwedagon is reflected in the calm water. The walkway, which runs mainly along the south and west sides of the lake, is also an ideal place to jog in the early morning or wander in the evening.
The best time to have a vacation at Kandawgyi Lake is from November to February. Hotels are of abundant choices from affordable price to fancy style.
