The Prek Toal Bird Sanctuary at the core area of the Tonle Sap Biosphere Reserve has become one of the most important breeding grounds for endangered water birds in Southeast Asia. It is a popular area for ecotourism and bird watching given the area's rich biodiversity.
Known as the largest waterbird colony in Southeast Asia, Prek Toal is covered mostly by freshwater swamp forest and home to many rare birds. Over 150 different species of rare birds can be found there, including Black-headed Ibis, Painted Stork, Greater and Lesser Adjuncts, Spot-billed Pelican, Milky Stork, Grey-Headed Fish Eagle, as well as three kinds of Cormorant.

From Chong Kneas boat dock, you’ll take a boat trip across Tonle Sap Great Lake and through the shrub of flooded forest, upon arrival meet Prek Toak Environmental Research Station for guiding tour to bird sanctuary. In addition to watching birds, you’ll have a chance to see how Cambodian locals living at a real floating village, enjoy Cambodian meals prepared at the community’s floating restaurant and get a deeper insight of conservation projects and local culture in Prek Toak.
The best time to visit Prek Toal is from December to May, when flocks of migratory birds congregate at Prek Toal. However, the water level is quite low after February, which makes the access difficult to get to the best place for bird watching. Between June and September, most birds are gone. From October, some birds are having their way back to Prek Toal for their breeding season.

The entrance fee for birds watching for 2 persons cost $25, 3 pax up cost $20 per person including boat guided tour to bird sanctuary. All your expenses will go through to local communities and contribute to the conversation of the area.
