Tham Chang is the most renowned of Vang Vieng numerous karst caves and rocky outcrops. These amazing caves are situated to the south west of Vang Vieng and are accessed by a bridge over the Nam Song River. It was used as a bunker in defence against Yunnanese Chinese invaders in the early 19th Century. At the foot of the cave crystal clear water runs out of the mountain into the river. Just down from the cave there is a patch of grass where you can have a nice picnic by the river. Besides, one of the paths leads to a view point outside the mountain where you can enjoy stunning scenery of the countryside. There follows a series of chambers all well-lit and easy to take photographs in. As is usual with caves there are lots of legends and shapes attached to structures in side.
Entrance is via Vang Vieng Resort south of town. You will have to pay 2.000 kips (0.24 USD) for crossing bridge and 15.000 kips (1.83 USD) for your entry fee to the caves.
